Indomitus Crusade and Dark Imperium

Warhammer Community has released a few more details on the Indomitus Crusade and something called the Dark Imperium. So what do we have?

Primaris Space Marines. Apparently Roboute Guilliman has ordered the Adeptus Mechanicus on Mars to design and create the Primaris Space Marines. Why? Because he foresaw all the dangers and whatever predicted that the Imperium will need them - and he made this prediction 10,000 years ago, right after the Horus Heresy.

Ah, okay...so Guilliman, the Ultrasmurf papa can see the future now. I thought that was Ahzek Ahriman's thing, but hey, he's a Primarch, so he gets to do it too. Ugh...

Anyway, what's this Indomitus Crusade, you ask? Well, Warhammer Community has provided an answer.

Basically the Indomitus Crusade is Guilliman gathering a bunch of Adeptus Custodes, a small contingent of Sisters of Silence (for contingencies, obviously), and a lot of Primaris Space Marines from newly created Chapters and turning them into a fleet. Obviously the old Space Marines didn't want to be left out, so the Imperial Fists joined in, as did a dozen pre-existing Chapters of Space Marines. So this awesome armada apparently traveled from world to world to root out the evil Chaos that beleaguered them and return these worlds to their rightful owners - the Imperium. So it's like the Great Crusade of the 31st Millennium, except that we're calling it Indomitus now.

Simply put, we're snatching back our planets from Chaos scum and returning them to the fold of the Imperium. Hell, yeah!

Unfortunately, it's not going to be easy because of the Great Rift. Many thousands of planets need help and reinforcements, so...it's going to take a while before we reclaim every single one of them. But hey, that's why we have the Imperial Guard!

Anyway, the Terra side of the Great Rift has a lot of problems, yeah, but the other side has it worst. Yeah, the side cut off from Solar Segmentum, on the opposite side of the Great Rift...they're not doing too well. To put it simply, everything has gone to hell.

Oh boy...and guess what? They're calling that side of the Imperium the Dark Imperium. How very original. I bet most of us were thinking, oh, the Dark Imperium is the Imperium that has fallen to the Dark Side! Nope, we already have Chaos for that. Instead, the Dark Imperium refers to the worlds beyond Segmentum Solar, the dudes out of reach of Guilliman's crusade thanks to the Great Rift and warp storms. They're invaded by Daemons and Chaos scum.

On the other hand, we have Baal, the home world of the Blood Angels, being one of these poor planets in the Dark Imperium. Apparently they are facing the full might of Hive Fleet Leviathan all by themselves. They only have themselves and their successor Chapters to rely on. Obviously, for gameplay reasons, the fluff will have Blood Angels receive Primaris Space Marines as reinforcements, but will it be enough?

Well...none of our business. The Draconian Armored Force and House Yato have their own worries. We're supposed to help Guilliman reclaim the worlds from Chaos. The Blood Angels can take care of their own mess. For now, we'll just roll over the Traitors with our tanks and Knights.

Tomorrow we'll be finding out stuff about teleportation and reserves, so stay tuned!

  1. I think its called "Dark" because they are cut off from the light of the Astronomican. Still, I agree its kind of a stupid name.

I think the Indomitus Crusade is a cool idea, but... I think it would have been cooler to actually spend some time watching the Great Rift spread and the Imperium fall apart, then done the Indomitus Crusade in a couple years. As is, especially as a Xenos player, its very frustrating that we skip over all the interesting stuff leading up to it and just cut straight to the Poster Boys winning. Its not good storytelling.

    1. I don't think the poster boys are winning, are they? I mean, it's a throwback to the Great Crusade, but I doubt everything will go Guilliman's way.

I think you'll be very happy as a Tyranids player because of Hive Fleet Leviathan assaulting Baal. I mean you guys won in the Shield of Baal campaign, you screwed over the Imperial Guard and the Sisters of Battle (that was so painful to read). I was kind of unhappy with that campaign because of how easily the Imperial Guard fell, and then the Blood Angels swooped in with Necron allies of all things and obliterated that Hive Fleet. It's annoying how they always make the Imperial Guard so impotent and needing to be saved by the Adeptus Astartes.

    2. At least your side if allowed to win. Sure, we'll assault Baal, but we won't destroy it. It will be just another copy of the assault on Macragge.

    3. To be fair, it sucks for the humans if the Tyranids do win. I mean, the story is obviously written from the Imperium point of view.

And I just read Engima of Flesh, and oh boy, the Tyranids won that one. The campaigns are one thing, but if you're aware of the Black Library novels, the Tyranids win more often than they lose and entire Imperial worlds are often abandoned to them. Sigh.

I don't think the Imperium won the Shields of Baal campaign. Yeah, they destroyed the Hive Fleet there, but the worlds were all rendered inhospitable and completely destroyed. The Blood Angels had to abandon them. I wouldn't call that a victory.

    4. No the Imperium didn't win, but the Necrons did. I'll have to pick up Enigma of Flesh and give it a read :)
